The Connor Residence, Toronto, Canada

Monday, 8:30 PM Local Time

Daniel had braced himself for bad news the moment he’d seen Wes’s name on his caller ID, and it turned out for good reason.

“There’s been a situation times three,” Wes said. “Sadly, one was personal to my contact.”

“Situation” coming from Wes was code for fatalities. “Sorry for your contact, but please tell me that Matthew and—”

“They’re fine, and everything is under control.”

Daniel sighed. That meant two of the bodies likely belonged to Vincent’s men. It only brought partial relief. She wouldn’t give up just because two of her men had been taken out. “Is your contact still good to proceed?” He felt for the contact’s loss, but he also knew that people who played with gunfire expected loss along the way. Sounded so callous, but it was a fact.

“She is.”

“She?” It was the first Daniel had heard the contact’s gender.

“Yes, but I assure you that she can—”

“Oh, I have no doubt in her abilities. Is she pretty?”

“She is.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Everything all right?”

“Yes, it’s just that… You know what? Never mind.” Daniel just hoped that the contact wouldn’t prove to be a distraction for Matthew, and he’d keep his wits about him.

“Is there anything else you need from me at this time?”

Daniel had told Wes when he’d originally called for help that it was a life-or-death predicament and his friend was already in it up to his neck. “There is something else.”

“Name it.”

“I already filled you in about Veronica Vincent and what she’s capable of.”

“Why I got my best contact on the job.”

“Right, well, I need you to track Veronica Vincent down. I’d bet she’s in Spain, just have no way of proving it.” He’d already told Wes that Veronica wasn’t to leave the United States, and if she had, it would be under an assumed name and fake passport.

“I’ll do what I can. No promises.”

“There never are.” Daniel hung up, but his phone rang immediately. “Wes?”

“No, it’s Justin, Mr. Iverson.”

“Well, about time.” He was on edge from Wes’s update more than he’d thought, and his harsh greeting netted him silence. “Sorry. Just tell me what you have,” Daniel encouraged.

“I’ve done the digging you’ve asked me to. All of it,” Justin said. “Where do you want me to start?”

“Is there any connection between Mel Wolf and Veronica Vincent?” He had called and added that side mission to Justin’s docket—the closest he’d gotten to asking anyone to dig into her before the request he’d just made of Wes.

“Not that I could find.”

Daniel deflated. Though he wasn’t entirely surprised by Justin’s news, he said, “You dug deep? Looked into his finances and his background?”

“Everything. He’s clean. On paper, anyway. He recently bought a house on Marco Island in Florida. His bank accounts showed nothing untoward or suspicious. No large deposits.”

“Lots of ways to hide money.” If he was hired by Vincent to lure Matthew out for her purposes, she would have paid handsomely and maybe even taught Mel Wolf how to hide the money. Though it was unlikely, given her selfish nature.
