Daniel had braced himself for bad news the moment heâd seen Wesâs name on his caller ID, and it turned out for good reason.
âThereâs been a situation times three,â Wes said. âSadly, one was personal to my contact.â
âSituationâ coming from Wes was code for fatalities. âSorry for your contact, but please tell me that Matthew andââ
âTheyâre fine, and everything is under control.â
Daniel sighed. That meant two of the bodies likely belonged to Vincentâs men. It only brought partial relief. She wouldnât give up just because two of her men had been taken out. âIs your contact still good to proceed?â He felt for the contactâs loss, but he also knew that people who played with gunfire expected loss along the way. Sounded so callous, but it was a fact.
âShe is.â
âShe?â It was the first Daniel had heard the contactâs gender.
âYes, but I assure you that she canââ
âOh, I have no doubt in her abilities. Is she pretty?â
âShe is.â
Daniel hesitated.
âEverything all right?â
âYes, itâs just that⦠You know what? Never mind.â Daniel just hoped that the contact wouldnât prove to be a distraction for Matthew, and heâd keep his wits about him.
âIs there anything else you need from me at this time?â
Daniel had told Wes when heâd originally called for help that it was a life-or-death predicament and his friend was already in it up to his neck. âThere is something else.â
âName it.â
âI already filled you in about Veronica Vincent and what sheâs capable of.â
âWhy I got my best contact on the job.â
âRight, well, I need you to track Veronica Vincent down. Iâd bet sheâs in Spain, just have no way of proving it.â Heâd already told Wes that Veronica wasnât to leave the United States, and if she had, it would be under an assumed name and fake passport.
âIâll do what I can. No promises.â
âThere never are.â Daniel hung up, but his phone rang immediately. âWes?â
âNo, itâs Justin, Mr. Iverson.â
âWell, about time.â He was on edge from Wesâs update more than heâd thought, and his harsh greeting netted him silence. âSorry. Just tell me what you have,â Daniel encouraged.
âIâve done the digging youâve asked me to. All of it,â Justin said. âWhere do you want me to start?â
âIs there any connection between Mel Wolf and Veronica Vincent?â He had called and added that side mission to Justinâs docketâthe closest heâd gotten to asking anyone to dig into her before the request heâd just made of Wes.
âNot that I could find.â
Daniel deflated. Though he wasnât entirely surprised by Justinâs news, he said, âYou dug deep? Looked into his finances and his background?â
âEverything. Heâs clean. On paper, anyway. He recently bought a house on Marco Island in Florida. His bank accounts showed nothing untoward or suspicious. No large deposits.â
âLots of ways to hide money.â If he was hired by Vincent to lure Matthew out for her purposes, she would have paid handsomely and maybe even taught Mel Wolf how to hide the money. Though it was unlikely, given her selfish nature.
